While we do not have opportunities for youth volunteers at the Shelter, there are many other ways for groups and individuals to help us serve animals. Some project ideas include:
Hold a fundraiser to benefit the Kootenai Humane Society. Financial donations allow us to use your donation where it is most needed, whether it is to provide emergency medical treatment to an injured animal, buy supplies for our surgical suite, or take in homeless animals from overcrowded shelters. Some groups have held book and bake sales, car washes, dog shows, carnivals, and talent shows for our benefit; the possibilities are endless. Be creative and see what your group can do!
Organize a supply drive to collect the things we need most. Our shelter is always in need of certain supplies. Visit our web site for a current “wish list” of items we need most (http://www.kootenaihumanesociety.com/donate/wishlist/). You can focus your collections drive on specific items we need (such as towels or dog/cat food), or ask members of your community to donate any item on the list.
Sponsor. Your family can sponsor an animal (or two, three, or more) under our Adopt-A-Cage program. You'll find more information here: http://www.kootenaihumanesociety.com/donate/adopt-a-cage/
Make blankets to keep cats cozy. Cut out a piece of double-sided fleece that is 24-36 inches square (exact size is not important). If you want, you can cut fringes on the sides. For a thicker blanket, stack two squares of fleece and sew the edges or tie the fringes together.
Recycle things in your home to help the animals!
Donated items can be brought to the customer service counter at any KHS location during regular business hours; no appointment is necessary. Groups are also welcome to schedule a tour of our facility at the time they bring in their donations.
Donate household items to the KHS Thrift Store. Our Thrift Store in Coeur d'Alene accepts donations.
Be a Foster Family. You and your parents can help in a very direct way. We always need families willing to help provide a temporary home for animals that are too young to be adopted, or need some special care until they are well enough or socialized enough to be adopted. Fostering an animal allows more space at KHS, so you are helping not just one animal, but many more!
Arrange for a KHS representative or volunteer to come to your class, youth group, or organization to discuss their work.
Think out of the box: The possibilities are endless how you can help Kootenai Humane Society's animals in need. We’re ALL ears! If you have another idea of how you, your family or group can help KHS, let us know! We’re always looking for bigger and better ideas to help out our amazing animals.
