Surrendering a pet is one of the most difficult and personal decisions a person will have to make. In our commitment to doing what is best for pets and the people in their lives, KHS empathizes with all circumstances and treats each situation with dignity and respect.

Knowing how difficult the decision to give up your pet can be, we do recommend carefully considering all options before surrendering your pet. Leaving your pet at a shelter should be a last resort.

How Do I Surrender a Pet to KHS

Call 208.772.4019. If you would like to surrender your pet to KHS so we can find him/her a new home, you must CALL FIRST and speak to a staff member to see if we have room available. At the time you call we will also gather information about the pet that needs to be surrendered. Please know that KHS is a limited-admission shelter and when we are at capacity we have to put animals on a wait list. Our wait list on adult cats can be up to 3-4 weeks before we have room available. Please plan ahead if you need to surrender your pet.

Dogs to be surrendered must be current on their canine distemper vaccine (DA2PP or DHPP). If your dog IS NOT current on his/her vaccine, you will be required to get him/her vaccinated at least five days prior to his/her surrender date. Vaccinations can be done at your vet or KHS will vaccinate the dog for $15. If KHS vaccinates the dog, the $15 charge will be applied to the surrender fee. If your pet is established with a vet, please plan to bring a copy of their veterinary records.

Surrender Fees

There is a fee for surrendering an animal to KHS. KHS is a 501.c.3 non-profit organization and this fee helps to cover some of the cost associated with caring for your animal while he/she waits to be adopted (i.e. food, boarding, medical care such as vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery, flea/tick control, etc.). We understand that not all individuals may have the monetary capacity to provide the required surrender fees. KHS will work with those individuals to make it possible for those individuals/animals to utilize our services.

ANIMAL FEE
Dogs $65.00
Cats $65.00
Dog or Cat plus litter (2 or more) $95.00
Rabbits, Ferrets, Chinchillas $35.00
Birds $25.00
Guinea Pigs, Hamsters, Rats, Mice $5.00
Other animals TBD

Pets Not Eligible

As much as we try to help everyone we can, there are circumstances in which we are not able to accept some pets. These include:

  • A pet showing very aggressive and unsociable behavior
  • A pet that has been deemed vicious or dangerous by Animal Control
  • Any animal that has been attack-trained
  • A veterinary examination has determined that the animal is physically unsuitable for adoption

Why a Surrender Fee

  • KHS is a nonprofit charitable organization that relies on donations to help us care for the animals in our community.
  • We do not place a time limit on any animal's length of stay in our shelter and these fees help with the rehoming costs of all of our residents.
  • On average it costs approximately $400 to care for each dog, cat, kitten, puppy during their stay at KHS. This cost includes spay/neuter, vaccinations, food, boarding, medical care, and more.
  • Adoption and surrender fees only offset a fraction of the cost of care.
