It's estimated that one in three pets will become lost at some point in their lifetime. Tragically, many will never be reunited with their families as they have no identification to speak for them. Before the unexpected happens, Kootenai Humane Society recommends that dogs and cats have two points of protection.
A collar with ID tag with your current phone number as well as any license tags as required in your community.
A microchip ID which provides a safe, effective and a permanent form of identification should your pet's collar and tag fall off or get removed. Be sure to update your pet's tag and microchip if your address or contact information changes.
Lost Pets in the Kootenai County Area
Kootenai Humane Society wants you to be reunited with your pet. It is critical to check local shelters in person for your missing dog or cat. It may take only a few hours or up to several weeks for an animal to be taken to a shelter. It is very important to check often for your animal and most of all, don't give up!
Kootenai Humane Society is contracted with the City of Coeur d'Alene and Rathdrum to receive the stray/lost dogs they pick up. These stray/lost dogs have 5 days to be claimed by their owners, upon the 6th day the dogs become the property of KHS and at this time they will be put up for adoption.
KHS is not contracted with Kootenai County so any animals running at large in Kootenai County which includes the city of Hayden, Post Falls, Dalton Gardens, and Athol, will be taken to the Post Falls Animal Control Facility.
If you have lost your pet, please call Animal Control for your area and report your dog missing. You can call us at 208.772.4019 and leave a message with a complete description of your dog, where and when it was lost and who to contact; we will add it to our Lost and Found log. You may also bring a flyer into the Adoption Center and post it on our Lost and Found board.

If you have found a dog please contact Animal Control for your area. Unfortunately, KHS is not able to accept lost/found dogs and can only do so when we receive them directly from Animal Control. We are more than happy to scan a lost/found dog for a microchip and provide the necessary phone numbers for you to contact Animal Control.
If you would prefer to keep the animal and try to locate the owner yourself, we recommend that you still contact Animal Control, have the animal scanned for a microchip and file a found report with area shelters. You can also run a free ad in the local papers and post a flyer on our Lost and Found board at our Adoption Center.
