As of March 17th and until further notice, KHS is closed to the public but will be doing adoptions by appointment. If you see a pet you are interested in adopting please call 208.772.4019 to schedule your appointment.

When you adopt a pet from KHS, not only are you adding to your family, you’re saving a life!

Kootenai Humane Society has some of the best pets anywhere and that means we have a variety of species, breeds, sizes, colors, and temperaments.  When you adopt a pet from us your adoption fee helps to provide medical care, food and shelter for the animals in our care and since we are a No-Kill shelter there is no time limit to how long we will keep an animal.

Our adoption fees include:

  • Spay/Neuter
  • Vaccinations
  • Rabies Vaccinations
  • Microchip ID
  • Free first time check-up from a local vet
  • Free meet and greet with pet from your home
  • Free counseling after adoption for any questions

The KHS Adoption Process

All adopters must be at least 18-years-old. Adopters are required to provide a current photo ID (driver's license or state-issued identification card).

Take a moment to browse our website or stop by the shelter 11650 N Ramsey Rd, Hayden to visit the animals in person. When you come to the shelter to adopt, please allow ample time to do so; at least 1-2 hours. Adding a new member to your family should never be rushed.

KHS Website:  Animal information is continually updated on the website. Be sure to refresh the Adoption page in your browser for the latest information. Once an adoption is complete, the pet’s picture/profile will no longer show on our Adopt page.

Hours for Meeting Pets and Adoptions:  We are open Mon-Sat 12-5:30 pm; Sun 12-3:30 pm for those who are interested in meeting a pet and adopting.

Meet the Animals

Once you have found an animal (or two) that you are interested in, you can spend some time getting to know them in our meet and greet areas or cat interaction room. During that time our technicians are on hand to visit with you and answer your questions about the pets. Our technicians have been trained to listen to what you are looking for in a pet and how that pet will fit into your lifestyle to try and help make the best match.

The Adoption

Once you have found a great match, and if that pet is ‘Available’ for adoption, you are able to take the pet home that same day. You will be asked to fill out an Adoption form and that information will be processed in our system.

Sometimes pets are available for viewing, but they are not ‘Available’ for adoption as they may still need to be spay/neutered, etc. If this is the case, we have a 'Hold Policy' for animals not marked ‘Available’ for adoption.

Pet Hold Policy:  When you have found a pet to adopt that is not currently ‘Available’ for adoption, you can place a $25 non-refundable hold on that pet. As soon as the pet is made ‘Available’ you will be contacted to come in and finish up the adoption process. Once notified, you will have 24-hours to complete the adoption or forfeit your hold and the pet will be made ‘Available’ for adoption.

Pet Meets:  We do require dog-to-dog meet and greets. If you intend to adopt the day you come to the shelter, bring your dog/s with you. If you find a dog that you are interested in adopting and your dog is not with you, we will hold the dog for a 1-hour period so you may retrieve your dog/s.

We Require Landlord Approval:  If you rent, please bring a copy of your rental agreement and proof of pet deposit stating you are able to have a pet. You can also provide your property manager's telephone number and we will place a call to verify that you are approved to have a pet and your deposit has been paid. We cannot put an animal on hold to verify that you are approved to have a pet, so please be sure to have all of that information prior to coming to adopt.
